Bitcoin Gambling Legality

Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nigeria: These are the countries that regard Bitcoin as “illegal”. In all other countries, Bitcoin is either used as a regulated currency or is not subject to a regulation but considered as legal. It is already quite strange to think that a currency can be “illegal”: Since USD or EUR cannot be illegal, it is not possible for Bitcoin to be illegal too. For this reason, with a few exceptions, the general rule is this: Bitcoin is a legal currency, but everything you do with it may not be legal.

The debate about the legality of Bitcoin is due to its use on Deep Web and Silk Road in the past. These black markets preferred Bitcoin because of its anonymity. The fact that government agencies such as the FBI define Bitcoin as a “haven for criminals” has led many to doubt about the legality of this currency. But Bitcoin is a currency like the others: If USD cannot be illegal because drug dealers are using it, Bitcoin cannot be considered as illegal too. (Criminals do not currently use Bitcoin anymore – there are many other crypto-currencies today that offer more privacy.) The fact that it doesn’t have a central authority and cannot be controlled by governments creates “anxiety” on some agencies and this is normal. But anxiety does not make Bitcoin illegal. In short, you can continue to use Bitcoin without worrying: No country declares this currency illegal, other than some countries which you cannot find on the world map. Here is what you need to remember: Bitcoin is a legal currency in almost every part of the world, but it is regulated in some countries and unregulated in others.

The Difference Between Bitcoin and Bitcoin Gambling

Being a legal currency does not mean that you can do anything you want with Bitcoin. Countries can ban various actions with laws, and if an action is banned, the currency you use to carry it does not lift that ban. If you live in America, for example, you can use USD. However, because it is forbidden to gamble in this country, American citizens cannot gamble using USD. Simple, right? This also applies to Bitcoin. Even if Bitcoin is legal, if it is illegal to gamble in the country you live in, Bitcoin gambling will be illegal too. What is considered illegal here is not the currency, but the action you have taken using that currency.

But Bitcoin has a significant advantage over other currencies: It is anonymous. Transactions you make using this currency cannot be tracked by governments and tax offices. The gambling sites that accept Bitcoin also accept members from anywhere in the world without the need to store their credentials. An e-mail account is enough to become a member. In other words, Bitcoin allows you to gamble completely anonymously. Regardless of the laws of your home country, you can play casino games and place sports bets using Bitcoin. Your government won’t be able to stop you – in fact, they even wouldn’t be able to see what you are doing. You are not using the banking system and do not share your identity: You are a “ghost” in the blockchain. For this reason, we can say that Bitcoin gambling is a “gray area”. It allows you to get rid of legal and geographical restrictions and get an unlimited gambling experience.

In addition, with Bitcoin gambling, you get several advantages:

  • Faster Transactions. The operations on Bitcoin blockchain are completed much faster than other payment methods. You do not have to wait for hours or even days: You can complete all deposit and withdrawal transactions in a few minutes. Moreover, banks and tax offices will have no information about the transactions you have made.
  • Lower Fees. A fee is also paid for blockchain transfers, but the amount is very low compared to other payment methods. By using alternatives such as Dogecoin instead of Bitcoin, you can further reduce fee amounts.
  • Fair Gambling. Bitcoin gambling sites have the provably fair feature. With this feature, you can be sure that whatever type of game you play is fair. Because the results are already sent to your computer, encrypted. The file is decrypted after the game is over and you can be sure that there was no “cheating”. Moreover, crypto-currencies like Ethereum allow an online casino to run completely on the blockchain and provide you with features like instant withdrawal.

Is Bitcoin Gambling Legal in my Country?

In the table below, you can see a list of legal regulations about Bitcoin and Bitcoin gambling in many countries. We tried to include as many countries as possible, but if your country is not on the list, local gambling laws will be decisive. In other words, if you are not allowed to gamble in our country, you can be sure that Bitcoin gambling is also prohibited too.

“Regulated” refers that there is a regulation of Bitcoin and/or online gambling. “Unregulated” means that Bitcoin is legal, but it is not subject to any legal regulation. Since this is not the goal of this article, we won’t provide detailed information about these regulations.
